For 10 years lesbian, gay, bisexual, and trangender educators have held tightly to One Teacher In 10 as a resource, a comfort, proof that they’re not alone. In this long-awaited second edition, 40 LGBT educators reveal what it’s like to be gay and teaching today–stories of struggling to be heard, of finding the strength to come out, and often, of being greeted with acceptance.

A lot has changed since the book’s first edition in 1994. Back then, educational organizations generally didn’t acknowledge LGBT people in schools, and for their part, LGBT organizations didn’t often make schools and young people top priorities. In that climate, finding enough teachers to fill a collection was a challenge. Many chose to use pseudonyms, as they were afraid to be known as gay in their schools and communities.

A decade later, the world has changed. A movement is afoot to make sure our schools are safe and effective environments for LGBT students, staff, and families. So it’s no surprise that this time around, all of the more than 100 people who submitted stories felt free to use their own names. And even after the agonizing selection process, the book you hold in your hands represents a wide spectrum of cultures, gender identities, and generations–truly, the rainbow at the end of the storm.
